India’s defence exports have reached an all-time high of ₹38,424 crore in the financial year 2025-26, marking a major milestone for the country’s indigenous defence manufacturing sector. The figure represents an increase of ₹14,802 crore, or 62.66%, compared with ₹23,622 crore in FY2024-25.

The record growth highlights India’s expanding role as a supplier of defence equipment, systems, and components to countries across the world.

    Strong growth across sectors

Public sector defence companies contributed 54.84% of total exports, while private defence firms accounted for 45.16%. Exports by Defence Public Sector Undertakings rose sharply by 151% compared with the previous year, while private-sector exports grew by 14%.

The rise in public-sector shipments was a key factor behind the overall record. At the same time, private companies continued to strengthen India’s position in global defence supply chains.

    Exports to over 80 countries

Indian defence products are now being exported to more than 80 countries. The number of Indian defence exporters has also increased from 128 to 145, reflecting wider participation from Indian manufacturers.

This growth is significant because defence exports are no longer limited to a few large companies. A broader base of manufacturers, suppliers, and technology firms is now contributing to India’s defence production ecosystem.

    A major leap from 2013-14

India’s defence exports have grown from just ₹686 crore in 2013-14 to ₹38,424 crore in FY2025-26. This long-term rise shows the impact of policy support, indigenous design and manufacturing, and increasing global confidence in Indian-made defence products.

The growth also aligns with the government’s broader push for self-reliance in defence under the Make in Indiainitiative.

    Government’s next target

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the government aims to take India’s annual defence exports to ₹50,000 crore by 2029. He also stressed the need for greater private-sector participation, stronger research and development, and increased indigenous manufacturing.

The target reflects India’s ambition to become one of the world’s leading defence exporters. Achieving it will require continued investment in advanced technologies, quality certification, global marketing, and faster approvals for defence manufacturers.

    Why the record matters

The record export figure is important for several reasons:

    • It strengthens India’s defence manufacturing base.
    • It generates revenue and employment in the domestic industry.
    • It reduces dependence on imports for critical technologies.
    • It improves India’s strategic partnerships with partner countries.
    • It supports the goal of building a self-reliant defence ecosystem.

India’s defence exports crossing ₹38,424 crore is not only an economic achievement but also a sign of the country’s growing technological and industrial capability. With strong policy support and expanding private-sector involvement, India appears well placed to move closer to its ₹50,000 crore export target by 2029.
