The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully tested Khagantak-243, an indigenously designed long-range glide bomb, in a major step towards self-reliant precision-strike capabilities.
The trial, announced on 2 September 2026, met all mission objectives and is expected to boost the development of long-range air-to-ground weapons by Indian industry.
What is Khagantak-243?
Khagantak-243 is a 300 kg-class precision-guided glide bomb developed jointly by private defence firm JSR Dynamicsand state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
Key features reported so far:
- Range: Can strike targets at more than 140 km when released from high altitude (around 12,000 metres).inshorts
- Warhead: Fitted with a Mk 81 general-purpose warhead carrying about 125 kg of explosives.
- Guidance: Uses a precision guidance kit that allows the bomb to glide and home in on a designated target instead of falling straight down.
In simple terms, Khagantak-243 lets an IAF fighter release the weapon from a safe distance, then the bomb glides towards the target using its onboard guidance system. This improves both the accuracy of the strike and the safety of the aircraft, which can stay outside the range of many enemy air-defence systems.
Why the test matters
The successful drop trial of Khagantak-243 is significant for three main reasons:

Khagantak-243 comes as India accelerates its push for homegrown precision munitions under Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.
Recent developments include:
- Work on other guided bombs and range-extension kits, such as the PGB-500 and systems like TARA, which convert conventional bombs into glide weapons.
- Policy moves to allow private firms to produce several DRDO missile technologies, including Astra, Pralay, and Akash, opening the door for more domestic players in advanced weapons manufacturing.
Khagantak-243 fits into this wider strategy as another building block in India’s emerging portfolio of indigenous stand-off strike options for the IAF.
