In a major push towards military self-reliance, India’s Defence Ministry on April 21, 2026, signed contracts worth ₹975 crore for advanced TRAWL systems. This deal equips the Indian Army’s T-72 and T-90 tanks with cutting-edge minefield breaching technology, significantly enhancing combat mobility on battlefields.
The agreements were finalized in New Delhi with Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Private Limited. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh oversaw the signing, marking a milestone under the ‘Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)’ category. This initiative slashes dependency on foreign imports and aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.
What Are TRAWL Systems?
Developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), TRAWL—short for Tank and Rough Terrain Assault Weapon Launcher—creates safe lanes through enemy minefields. It neutralizes threats like anti-tank mines equipped with proximity magnetic fuses, as well as passive and active influence mines. During operations, the system deploys ahead of tanks, ensuring mechanized forces can advance without halting for manual clearance.
This capability proves vital in modern warfare, where minefields slow advances and expose troops to ambushes. Equipped on T-72 and T-90 tanks—backbones of India’s armored fleet—TRAWL boosts operational speed and survivability, giving the Army a decisive edge in diverse terrains from deserts to mountains.
Driving Domestic Growth and Jobs
Beyond defence upgrades, the TRAWL systems deal spotlights economic ripple effects. It empowers domestic industries, particularly Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), by involving them in component manufacturing. This generates thousands of direct and indirect jobs, from precision engineering to assembly lines.
BEML and the hydraulics firm will lead production, sourcing parts from a network of local suppliers. Such projects exemplify how defence procurement fuels ‘Make in India’. Historically, similar indigenization efforts have expanded MSME participation in defence, with procurement values surging in recent years. This deal reinforces that trend, blending national security with industrial revival.
Strategic Significance Amid Regional Tensions
India’s border challenges, including with China and Pakistan, underscore the need for rapid breaching tools. Mine warfare remains a staple in these regions, and TRAWL addresses gaps in swift, reliable countermeasures. By integrating DRDO innovations directly into frontline units, the Army gains battle-ready assets without delays.
The procurement follows rigorous trials validating TRAWL’s efficacy across mine types. It complements ongoing tank modernization, ensuring T-72 and T-90 fleets stay competitive against evolving threats.
A Step Towards Full Self-Reliance
This ₹975 crore commitment reflects Defence Ministry’s broader strategy: over 70% of capital acquisitions now prioritize Indian designs. Partnerships like these with public and private firms accelerate tech transfer, skill-building, and export potential.
As production ramps up, expect more MSME success stories and a stronger defence ecosystem. The TRAWL systems deal not only fortifies the Army’s minefield breaching prowess but also cements India’s rise as a global defence manufacturing hub.
