India and the United Kingdom are on track to implement their landmark Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) by April 2026, according to a senior government official. Signed on July 24, 2025, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to London, the pact comes after three years of intense negotiations. It has cleared major hurdles, including ratification debates in the UK House of Commons since January 2026. A parallel Double Contributions Convention will simplify social security rules for temporary workers from both nations.
This agreement promises transformative gains for bilateral trade, currently valued at $56-60 billion annually. Projections indicate it could double to $112 billion within years, fueled by near-total duty-free access for 99% of Indian exports to the UK market. India will reciprocate by reducing tariffs on British goods like Scotch whisky and luxury cars. Long-term, the deal could add £25.5 billion to combined economies through expanded services and professional mobility.
Key Indian sectors stand to benefit immensely. Textiles and leather goods will enjoy a competitive edge with zero-duty entry into the UK, challenging rivals in global markets. Gems and jewellery exporters anticipate lower costs and surging volumes. Engineering products, chemicals, and 26 other areas gain from streamlined standards and easier market access. India’s services sector, already exporting $19.8 billion previously, will see enhanced opportunities for skilled professionals.
The timeline aligns with final approvals in both parliaments, targeting a mutual start date. This move strengthens India-UK ties amid global trade shifts, positioning both as strategic partners. For Indian businesses, especially SMEs in export hubs, it opens doors to diversified markets and reduced logistics costs.
As implementation nears, stakeholders eye ripple effects on jobs, investments, and supply chains. The India-UK Free Trade Agreement marks a new era of prosperity, blending economic ambition with diplomatic momentum.
