NDA Sweeps Bihar Assembly Elections 2025: Nitish Kumar Stays, BJP Emerges Strongest

The 2025 Bihar Assembly Elections have produced one of the most decisive results in the state’s history, with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) securing 204 out of 243 seats—an overwhelming mandate that ensures Nitish Kumar’s return as Chief Minister for the fifth term.

Seat Tally and Leading Parties

The NDA’s strong coalition, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)), routed the opposition Mahagathbandhan, which includes the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress. The BJP claimed 91 seats while JD(U) won 83. Key ally Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) (LJPRV) secured 19 seats and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAMS) got 5. The opposition Mahagathbandhan struggled, with RJD winning 25 seats and Congress just six.

High Public Engagement and Voter Turnout

The election saw a record voter turnout of 67.13%, the highest ever in Bihar. Notably, women’s participation (71.6%) surpassed that of men (62.8%), reflecting growing female engagement in the democratic process. The polls were conducted in two phases, on November 6 and 11, and the votes counted on November 14.

Major Issues and Emerging Trends

Key issues during the campaign were governance, employment, migration, and social justice. The NDA’s appeal across castes, especially its popularity among women and marginalised communities, helped secure the landslide. New entrants like the Jan Suraj Party influenced select constituencies but did not disrupt the NDA’s dominance.

What This Result Means

With Nitish Kumar at the helm, the NDA’s clear win marks a continued era for its governance and sets the political narrative for the state. The results also signalled a shift in public sentiment, with voters welcoming stability and reform.
