India’s journey toward defence self-reliance reached a major milestone on Friday as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) showcased the first Tejas Mk1A fighter jet at its Nashik manufacturing line. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is presiding over the event, which signals India’s growing strength in indigenous combat aircraft production.
The new generation Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A, coded LA‑5043, is the first to roll out of HAL’s Nashik facility. It has successfully cleared all preliminary flight tests and could perform a short demonstration flight during the event. With the Nashik plant becoming HAL’s third line for Tejas production, the company aims to meet the Indian Air Force’s ambitious order of 180 fighters by 2032.
The Tejas Mk1A introduces advanced capabilities that significantly upgrade its predecessor. Equipped with an AESA radar, electronic warfare suite, air-to-air refuelling, and advanced avionics, the fighter offers improved targeting and combat endurance. Compatibility with modern Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles like Astra Mk2 gives it a vital edge in aerial combat.
Designed with over 65 percent indigenous components, the aircraft reflects the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, aiming to replace the ageing MiG‑21 fleet in the Air Force. In a major procurement boost, the government recently approved a ₹62,000 crore order for 97 more Tejas Mk1A jets, in addition to the 83 already contracted.
HAL’s Nashik division, established with an investment of ₹500 crore, enhances India’s fighter jet production capacity to nearly 10 aircraft annually. The expansion not only strengthens national security but also opens export opportunities to friendly nations.
