Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, currently on the Axiom-4 mission, shared an emotional reflection from space, telling Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the world appears borderless from above and that India looks much larger than it does on maps. His words captured the essence of unity beyond borders, as he observed Earth without man-made divisions.
Speaking from the International Space Station, Shukla said the mission is more than just a spaceflight—it represents a new beginning for India’s human space exploration efforts. As the first Indian to reach the ISS in over four decades, his message has struck a chord with millions back home. His journey has been described as being part of something “much larger than yourself”, a feeling deeply rooted in both personal pride and national identity.
Prime Minister Modi congratulated Shukla, calling him a symbol of India’s aspirations and innovation. He said that Shukla is carrying with him the hopes of 1.4 billion Indians. President Droupadi Murmu also lauded the astronaut’s achievement and used the ancient phrase Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family—to describe the broader message of the mission.
From high above the Earth, Shukla’s words reminded the world that space has the power to erase borders, inspire unity, and expand the idea of what it means to belong to a country and to humanity as a whole.
