UK Deputy PM: Delhi AI Summit Marks Pivotal Moment for Safe AI Revolution

The AI Impact Summit to be launched in New Delhi on February 16, 2026, positioning India as a leader in global AI innovation. Hosted under the IndiaAI Mission at Bharat Mandapam, the event runs through February 20 and focuses on ethical AI use, collaboration, and widespread benefits.

UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy called it “an important moment” for nations to harness AI’s full potential while prioritizing safety. Speaking at the summit, he highlighted AI’s power to boost economic growth, generate jobs, and improve services like quicker medical diagnoses and tailored education. Lammy stressed partnering with India, a “natural tech ally,” thanks to British expansions by firms such as Infosys, TCS, and Wipro.

Summit Goals and Structure

Organized into seven “chakras” or working groups, the summit tackles safe AI, human capital development, and resource democratization. Aims include making India a global AI services hub, expanding compute access, and empowering citizens through innovation. Innovation challenges offer prizes up to Rs 2.5 crore to spark breakthroughs.

Star-Studded Lineup

Global tech giants joined forces with Indian leaders. Attendees feature Google CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, and Reliance’s Mukesh Ambani, plus Nandan Nilekani. Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored India’s vanguard role in AI transformation during the opening.

This gathering underscores deepening UK-India ties in tech, with Lammy’s UK team—including AI Minister Kanishka Narayan—pushing for shared standards on safety and growth. As AI reshapes economies, the Delhi summit signals a unified path forward, blending innovation with responsibility.
