Bondi Beach Shooting: 12 Dead in Antisemitic Attack on Hanukkah Crowd

A tragic mass shooting at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach has shocked Australia, claiming 12 lives during a peaceful Hanukkah celebration. The attack, labeled a terrorist incident by authorities, unfolded on December 14, 2025, targeting a Jewish community event.

Attack Unfolds Near Beachfront

Around 6:45 p.m. local time, two gunmen in black attire emerged with shotguns, firing on over 1,000 attendees gathered along Campbell Parade for a Chabad-hosted Hanukkah gathering. Eyewitness videos showed the assailants shooting from a nearby bridge, sparking chaos as families fled in terror. One hero, bystander Ahmed al Ahmed, tackled and disarmed a shooter, enduring two gunshot wounds in the process.

Heavy Toll and Swift Police Action

The assault left 12 people dead, including one gunman killed during a fierce shootout with police; the second attacker remains in critical condition and custody. Among the 29 injured were at least two officers, with a suspected explosive device found and neutralized in the suspects’ vehicle. New South Wales police secured the area, calling it Australia’s deadliest mass shooting since 1996’s Port Arthur tragedy.

Global Leaders Condemn Antisemitic Terror

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese branded the event an “evil antisemitic terror attack,” vowing justice. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns described it as a “terrifying, malevolent act” shattering a night of joy. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the “ghastly terrorist attack,” stating India stands in solidarity with Australia, has zero tolerance for terrorism, and extends condolences to victims’ families. Jewish leaders and global figures, including Israeli President Isaac Herzog and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, united in outrage against the hate-fueled violence; one suspect, Naveed Akram, has been named, with raids ongoing.
This heartbreaking event underscores rising concerns over antisemitism amid global tensions. Investigations continue as Australia mourns.
