India-Singapore: A New Era in Strategic Partnership

India and Singapore marked 60 years of diplomatic relations by expanding their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with an ambitious roadmap that goes far beyond traditional diplomacy. During Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, both leaders emphasized a “partnership with purpose,” rooted in shared values and mutual interests.

Technology, Trade, and Innovation

The roadmap includes cooperation in advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technologies, and semiconductor research—highlighting Singapore’s continued investments in India’s dynamic tech ecosystem. The agreement also broadens digital connectivity and payments, with 13 Indian banks joining the UPI–PayNow cross-border system. Additionally, the nations are collaborating on green and digital shipping corridors to strengthen supply chains and port operations.

Security and Regional Stability

Both nations reiterated their commitment to fighting terrorism and enhancing defense cooperation. In light of recent terror attacks, Modi thanked Singapore for its solidarity and support. Agreements signed cover space science (with over 20 Singapore satellites launched by India), civil nuclear energy, skilling, and urban water management.

Deepening People-to-People Ties

Cultural and educational exchanges remain central to the partnership. Initiatives like the India–Singapore Hackathon and new MoUs for civil service training promise to deepen connections between the two societies.

Economic Pillars and the ASEAN Link

Singapore stands as India’s largest foreign investor in Southeast Asia, accounting for a significant share of trade and FDI inflow. The leaders have committed to a time-bound review of existing trade agreements, including the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) and India’s free trade pact with ASEAN, to accelerate growth.
