On the evening of August 14, 2025, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation on the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, delivering an inspiring message that blended gratitude for India’s past with a confident vision for its future.

Honouring the Freedom Struggle

President Murmu began by paying heartfelt tribute to the nation’s freedom fighters, recalling their sacrifices and courage. She stated that saluting the tricolour is a way of honouring those who fought for a free India, reminding citizens of the deep pride this day holds.

The Theme – Naya Bharat

This year’s Independence Day theme, ‘Naya Bharat’ (New India), symbolises a progressive, self-assured nation embracing change while staying true to its democratic and cultural foundations. Highlighting achievements like Operation Sindoor and the completion of the Kashmir Rail Link, she celebrated India’s growing strength in infrastructure and defence.

Growth, Self-Reliance, and the Economy

Calling the last year a milestone in India’s development journey, the President pointed out a 6.5% GDP growth rate, the highest among major economies. She urged citizens to support local manufacturing under Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, drawing parallels with the Swadeshi movement of the freedom era.

Democracy, Unity, and Justice

Reiterating the pillars of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, President Murmu stressed the importance of inclusivity and aiding those historically disadvantaged. She also paid tribute to the victims of Partition on Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas, urging the nation to remain united against divisive forces.

Governance and Anti-Corruption

Quoting Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals, she reinforced India’s commitment to zero tolerance for corruption and the delivery of clean, transparent governance.

Progress in Urban and Social Development

Her speech also highlighted the government’s efforts in expanding metro connectivity, upgrading urban infrastructure through the AMRUT Mission, and improving access to clean water and sanitation facilities.

Closing with Confidence

President Murmu concluded with optimism, saying India is moving forward with “great confidence” toward becoming a fully self-reliant, globally respected nation prepared to meet future challenges.
