Varun Chakravarthy’s 5-Wicket Haul Powers India to Victory Over New Zealand

India secured a commanding 44-run victory over New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, thanks to a sensational spell by mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy. Playing only his second ODI, Chakravarthy stunned the Kiwi batting lineup with his exceptional bowling, taking 5 wickets for 42 runs.

Batting first, India posted a competitive total of 278/7 in 50 overs. Key contributions came from skipper Rohit Sharma (65) and Shubman Gill (72). In response, New Zealand struggled against India’s spin attack and was bowled out for 234 runs.

Chakravarthy’s variations, including off-breaks, leg-breaks, and carrom balls, proved too difficult for the Kiwi batters to handle. His spell turned the game in India’s favor, earning him the “Player of the Match” award.

Cricket legend Anil Kumble praised Chakravarthy, calling his performance “exceptional” and highlighting his consistent match-winning abilities. The Indian team now faces a “good headache” in selecting their bowling attack for the semi-finals.

With this win, India topped Group A with three consecutive victories and secured a semi-final spot against Australia on March 4 in Dubai. The team will now strategize on whether to retain Chakravarthy in the playing XI for the crucial knockout game.

This remarkable performance has not only strengthened India’s campaign but has also placed Varun Chakravarthy among the key players to watch in the tournament.
