From Moscow to Vienna: PM Modi’s diplomatic marathon to strengthen ties in Europe

PM Modi to visit Moscow and Vienna

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Russia from July 8 to July 9, 2024, marking his first official visit to the country since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022. This visit is particularly significant as it aims to underline the longstanding engagement between India and Russia and will include the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit.

During his stay in Moscow, PM Modi is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a broad range of issues, including bilateral relations and various regional and global matters of mutual interest.

This trip is notable not only for its geopolitical implications but also because it will be PM Modi’s first visit to Russia in nearly five years; his last visit was in 2019 to attend an economic conclave in Vladivostok. Since then, the dynamics of international relations have shifted dramatically, especially with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Despite these tensions, India has maintained a balanced approach, not condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine, while also subtly urging for resolutions.

Following his visit to Russia, PM Modi will proceed to Austria on July 9 and 10. This leg of his journey will also be historic as it marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Austria in 41 years. In Vienna, PM Modi is expected to meet with Austrian President Alexander Van der Belle and Chancellor Karl Nehammer. A key feature of his visit will be addressing business leaders from both nations, likely focusing on enhancing trade and economic cooperation.

The visits to both Russia and Austria are poised to strengthen India’s foreign relations and emphasize its strategic diplomatic efforts in Europe amidst global conflicts and economic challenges.
