Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in the United States for a landmark three-day state visit, meeting US President Donald Trump in Washington amid rising global tensions. The trip, running from September 23 to 25, 2026, marks Xi’s first state visit to the US in over a decade and comes at a critical time for the world’s two largest economies.
Rare Tarmac Welcome in Maryland
In an unusual show of diplomatic courtesy, President Trump personally welcomed Xi and First Lady Peng Liyuan at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, on Wednesday evening. The red-carpet reception, complete with military honors, underscored the importance both leaders place on stabilising US–China ties.
Trade Truce Extended to January 2027
As Xi touched down, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that Washington and Beijing have agreed to extend their existing trade truce by two months, until January 10, 2027. The original 11-month deal, struck after the October 2025 Trump–Xi summit in Busan, had been set to expire on November 10, 2026. Under the truce, both sides have held back on imposing new tariffs and some export controls, though disagreements remain over Taiwan, rare-earth minerals, and narcotics.
White House Agenda: Trade, Tech, Taiwan, and Iran
The core of the visit is Thursday’s bilateral meeting at the White House, where Trump and Xi are expected to discuss:
- Trade and tariffs: Extending tariff relief and addressing export-control disputes.
- Technology and AI: Building on a newly agreed US–China standing dialogue on artificial intelligence, though US chip export curbs are not on the table.
- Taiwan and regional security: Managing flashpoints in the Indo-Pacific, including US arms sales and Chinese military activity.
- Iran and critical minerals: Navigating the US–Iran conflict and China’s leverage via rare-earth export controls due to lapse in November.
Star-Studded State Dinner
On Thursday night, Trump is hosting a state dinner for Xi at the White House, attended by about 125 guests due to ongoing renovations in the East Room. The guest list reads like a who’s who of global tech and finance: Apple’s Tim Cook, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Tesla’s Elon Musk, Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai, JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon, and Citigroup’s Jane Fraser, among others.
Cultural Program and Next Summits
The visit wraps up on Friday with a private tea for the two couples at the White House and a tour of the National Archives to view historic US–China documents. This Washington meeting is the second of four planned in-person Trump–Xi summits in 2026, with the next two scheduled for the APEC leaders’ meeting in Shenzhen (November) and the G20 summit in Florida (December).
For India and other emerging economies, the outcomes on chips, rare earths, and “China+1” supply chains will be closely watched, even though New Delhi is not on the formal agenda.
