India’s women’s hockey team created history on Friday by defeating defending champions China 1–0 in the final of the Asian Games 2026. The victory ended India’s 44-year wait for the women’s hockey gold medal at the continental event.
The final was played at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Japan. India’s only previous Asian Games women’s hockey title came in 1982.
Lalremsiami gives India the lead
Lalremsiami scored the match-winning goal in the 10th minute. She produced a powerful reverse-hit finish to put India ahead early in the contest.
The goal was especially memorable as it came during Lalremsiami’s 200th international appearance. India then focused on protecting its narrow advantage as China increased the pressure.
Savita Punia makes crucial save
China created several opportunities during the later stages of the match and earned a penalty stroke. Veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia showed great composure and made a crucial save to deny China an equaliser.
India’s defenders also produced a disciplined performance. Despite sustained pressure from the Chinese team, they kept their opponents from scoring and preserved the 1–0 lead until the final whistle.
India secure LA 2028 Olympic berth
Along with the gold medal, India secured direct qualification for the women’s hockey competition at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The qualification is significant for the Indian team, which missed the Paris 2024 Olympics. India’s historic Asian Games victory now gives the side an opportunity to return to the Olympic stage in 2028.
The triumph marks India’s second Asian Games women’s hockey gold and one of the team’s most important victories in recent years.
