Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to support a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict. Putin said Modi regularly raises the issue during their meetings and has “very good ideas” for finding a mutually acceptable settlement.
Speaking at the Valdai International Discussion Club, Putin said the Indian prime minister consistently discusses the need to end the war. He added that Modi takes a keen interest in efforts to bring peace to the region.
“Every time we meet, Prime Minister Modi raises the issue of ending the conflict,” Putin said, according to reports. The Russian president also acknowledged Modi’s interest in promoting dialogue between the parties involved.
Putin’s comments come as India continues to maintain diplomatic engagement with both Russia and Ukraine. New Delhi has repeatedly called for dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward, while also emphasising the humanitarian impact of the prolonged conflict.
India has maintained close relations with Russia but has also remained in contact with Ukraine and Western countries. The Indian government has consistently stated that lasting peace can be achieved only through discussions and negotiations.
Putin’s remarks suggest that Moscow recognises India’s potential role in encouraging communication and exploring possible solutions to the conflict. However, no specific details of the ideas discussed by Modi were made public.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has continued to remain a major global concern, affecting international security, energy markets, food supplies and diplomatic relations. Against this backdrop, India’s balanced position has drawn attention from countries seeking diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.
Putin’s statement also comes amid growing international calls for an end to the conflict and for the parties to explore a mutually acceptable peace agreement.
