India and the United States are on the verge of sealing a major bilateral trade agreement, with US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor announcing that the negotiations are 99% complete. According to Gor, only 1% of the trade deal talks remain, marking a significant milestone in India-US economic relations. Speaking on May 29, 2026, Gor described India as a trusted partner and expressed confidence that an interim trade agreement could be finalized within the next few weeks.
The Indian Commerce Ministry has confirmed that a high-level US trade delegation will visit India from June 1 to June 4, 2026. This visit is specifically designed to iron out the remaining clauses of the proposed bilateral agreement. The US team will be led by America’s chief negotiator, and discussions will focus on finalizing key details of the trade pact, resolving pending issues, and accelerating bilateral trade discussions. This meeting represents the final push toward concluding what has been described as a positive and productive negotiation process.
Gor’s remarks underscore significantly growing cooperation between India and the US across multiple critical sectors including trade, technology, pharmaceuticals, space, and research. This broad-based cooperation reflects the depth of the strategic partnership between the two nations. The trade deal represents more than just an economic agreement, as it signals strengthening strategic partnership between the world’s two largest democracies. Gor emphasized that real friends can disagree but will always resolve differences, highlighting the mature diplomatic relationship between India and the US.
Earlier negotiations in Washington in April 2026 yielded positive progress, with officials from both sides making significant headway. Negotiators have reported that only a few issues remain unresolved. The successful conclusion of this agreement is expected to boost bilateral trade volumes, enhance market access for businesses in both countries, strengthen economic security ties, and support broader Indo-Pacific strategic objectives.
With the June 1-4 delegation visit scheduled, attention now turns to resolving the final 1% of outstanding issues. Industry observers and government officials alike are optimistic that the interim trade agreement will be signed within weeks, setting the foundation for a comprehensive long-term trade partnership. Indian Commerce Ministry officials have expressed confidence in the process, and the upcoming talks are expected to be the final step before the historic agreement is officially sealed.
