LPG Crisis Grips India’s Hotels and Restaurants: Supply Shortage Sparks Closures

A sudden commercial LPG shortage has thrown India’s hospitality sector into chaos, with hotels and restaurants across major cities facing closures and reduced operations. Triggered by global supply disruptions from the US-Iran conflict, the crisis escalated in early March 2026, hitting urban eateries hardest.

Widespread Impact on Key Cities

Mumbai reports the sharpest fallout, where up to 20% of hotels and restaurants have shut down or scaled back, with fears of 50% closures looming without quick relief. In Bengaluru and Chennai, supplies halted since early March, prompting warnings from local hotel associations about full shutdowns.

The ripple extends to Pune, Delhi, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Nagpur, Mysuru, and Kolkata. Eatery owners describe panic buying and black market premiums, forcing some to switch to firewood or halt kitchen operations entirely.

Root Causes of the Shortage

At the heart lies the US-Iran war’s chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for LPG shipments. This sparked a massive price surge: a ₹114.50 hike per 19-kg commercial cylinder on March 9, pushing 2026 cumulative costs to ₹302.50.

Compounding this, government orders prioritized household LPG to prevent hoarding, extending booking gaps to 25 days. A March 5 directive sowed confusion among distributors, stalling commercial deliveries while essentials like homes took precedence.

Government’s Swift Interventions

Responding to outcries, the Centre formed a three-member panel from oil marketing companies (OMCs)—Indian Oil, BPCL, and HPCL—to assess and prioritize non-domestic supply requests based on merit and stock levels.

Emergency powers activated refineries to ramp up LPG output, with hospitals and schools getting top slots. Hotel bodies are slated to meet Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri today, March 11, as production boosts aim to ease the crunch.

No panic needed for households, officials stress, as imports diversify and reserves build. Yet, commercial users brace for short-term pain, with some eateries eyeing alternatives like electric stoves.

Outlook for Hospitality Sector

Industry leaders urge faster distributor clearances and subsidy tweaks for commercial users. While urban metros bear the brunt, rural areas see milder effects due to lower reliance on cylinders.

This LPG saga underscores India’s vulnerability to global energy shocks, especially amid geopolitical tensions. As supplies stabilize, the focus shifts to resilient backups for the food service backbone that employs millions.
