Pakistan-Afghanistan ‘Open War’: Trump Praises Sharif and Munir Amid Deadly Airstrikes

Pakistan and Afghanistan are locked in fierce border clashes that Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has labeled an “open war” against the Taliban regime. Tensions exploded after Afghan forces attacked Pakistani border posts, triggering Pakistan’s swift retaliation with airstrikes deep into Afghan territory.

Airstrikes Hit Key Targets

Since Thursday, Pakistan targeted 22 Afghan military sites, including positions in Kabul and Kandahar. Official claims state the strikes killed 274 Taliban officials and fighters, injured over 400, and destroyed 73 posts. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) detailed the operation’s success in a video release.

The Taliban countered, reporting 55 Pakistani soldiers killed and several posts captured. They deny harboring militants, accusing Pakistan of aggression. Casualty figures remain disputed, with fighting resuming along the contentious Durand Line, especially in Paktika province, as of February 28.

Trump’s Strong Endorsement

US President Donald Trump weighed in, saying he “gets along with Pakistan very well.” He lavished praise on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir, calling them “great” leaders and noting Pakistan is “doing terrifically well.” Trump hinted at possible intervention but held back, emphasizing his respect for Islamabad’s leadership.

These comments underscore US diplomatic backing for Pakistan amid the crisis. Earlier ties, like Trump’s past labeling of Munir as his “favourite field marshal,” highlight the rapport.

Regional Fallout

Afghans fear further escalation, with Kabul bombed and cross-border shelling intensifying. The conflict risks broader instability in South Asia, drawing global attention. Both sides urge restraint, but operations continue.

Pakistan vows to press on until threats end, while the Taliban promises retaliation. Watch for de-escalation efforts or UN involvement.
