Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel on February 25-26, 2026, marked a milestone in bilateral relations. Meeting Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv, Modi announced that India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will soon power transactions in Israel. This links UPI with Israel’s Massav system, easing digital payments for tourists, businesses, and shoppers.
The leaders also fast-tracked a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Building on terms agreed in November 2025, the deal promises deeper trade in goods, services, and tech. Negotiations aim for quick closure, opening doors for Indian exports like gems, pharma, and IT services.
Elevated Partnership
India-Israel ties upgraded to a “special strategic partnership.” Key areas include:
- Defence: Joint production, tech transfers, and drone tech.
- Tech Innovation: AI, quantum computing, cybersecurity MoUs.
- Agriculture: Plans for 100 Centers of Excellence.
- Other Sectors: Space, critical minerals, civil nuclear energy, fisheries, and culture.
Multiple pacts were inked, aligning with the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) for connectivity.
Shared Stance on Security
Modi reaffirmed India’s solidarity against terrorism, pledging to stand “shoulder-to-shoulder” with Israel. He backed the Gaza Peace Plan, urging that “humanity must never become a victim of conflict.”
This visit strengthens economic and strategic bonds. UPI’s Israel entry could inspire similar global expansions, while the FTA may boost bilateral trade beyond $10 billion annually. A win for digital India and Make in India initiatives.
