UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a strong call for responsible AI development during his speech at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, the first major AI event hosted in the Global South. Speaking on February 18, 2026, he stressed that AI must be safe, accessible to all nations, and powered by clean energy to avoid environmental harm and inequality.
Guterres warned that rapid AI growth risks widening global divides if left unchecked. “AI cannot be left to the whims of a few billionaires,” he said, highlighting how massive data centers guzzle energy and water, often straining vulnerable communities. He demanded that tech firms shift these operations to renewable sources immediately, ensuring AI supports—rather than undermines—climate goals.
To make AI truly inclusive, Guterres proposed a $3 billion global fund, equivalent to less than 1% of one tech giant’s yearly revenue. This fund would equip developing countries with essential tools: skills training, data access, computing power, and supportive ecosystems. “AI must augment human potential, not replace it,” he added, emphasizing protection for workers, children, and human rights.
The UN chief also announced a landmark global dialogue on AI governance, set to launch in Geneva in July 2026. This forum will unite governments, industry leaders, academia, and civil society to establish clear rules. Key priorities include curbing biases, preserving human oversight, and harnessing AI for sustainable development in areas like medicine, education, food security, and climate action.
Guterres praised India’s summit for expanding the AI conversation beyond wealthy nations, calling it a step toward equitable progress. With “dignity as the default setting,” he envisions AI as a force for good—if governed wisely.
This vision challenges AI pioneers to prioritize people and planet over profits, ensuring technology serves humanity’s shared future.
