The Indian Navy has taken delivery of INS Taragiri, the fourth Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) stealth frigate, from Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) in Mumbai on November 28, 2025. This marks the third such vessel built by MDL and the fourth handed over in just 11 months, accelerating India’s self-reliance in warship construction.
Design and Build Milestone
Taragiri, named after Uttarakhand’s Taragiri hills and reviving a legacy Leander-class frigate (1980-2013), spans 149 meters, displaces 6,670 tonnes, and uses CODOG propulsion for speeds over 28 knots. Built in 81 months using integrated modular methods—shorter than the lead ship’s 93 months—it boasts 75-95% indigenous content, including DMR 249A steel for enhanced stealth via low radar signature.
Advanced Weapons and Sensors
Equipped for multi-role missions, Taragiri features BrahMos supersonic missiles for surface strikes, MF-STAR radar with MRSAM for air defense, a 76mm super rapid gun, 30mm/12.7mm close-in weapons, torpedoes, and rockets for anti-submarine warfare. An Integrated Platform Management System and combat suites ensure superior automation and survivability over the Shivalik-class.
This delivery underscores India’s naval prowess, with the remaining three Project 17A frigates due by August 2026, strengthening maritime security.
