India celebrates National Press Day every year on November 16 to honor the essential role of a free, responsible, and independent press in a thriving democracy. This day marks the establishment of the Press Council of India (PCI) in 1966, created to ensure press freedom while promoting high standards of ethical journalism.
The media is often called the “Fourth Pillar of Democracy” due to its role in shaping public opinion, holding power accountable, and fostering transparency. National Press Day draws attention to the media’s continued importance amid new challenges posed by digital media, misinformation, and fast-changing technology.
This year’s celebrations include nationwide events such as seminars, discussions, and the prestigious National Awards for Excellence in Journalism. The highest honor, the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Award, recognizes outstanding journalistic contributions across various fields.
India’s media landscape is expanding rapidly, with registered publications increasing significantly over the last two decades. To support this growth and modernization, the government introduced landmark legal reforms, including the Press and Registration of Periodicals Act, 2023. This Act replaced the colonial-era law with a streamlined, fully digital registration system via the Press Sewa Portal, enhancing transparency and ease of doing business for publishers.
The Press Council of India remains a key guardian of press freedom, empowered to inquire into press misconduct and uphold ethical standards. It also focuses on journalist welfare, professional development, and international engagement. The Indian Institute of Mass Communication, now a deemed university, contributes by training media professionals in diverse languages, strengthening the media ecosystem.
National Press Day is more than a celebration; it is a reaffirmation of the vital role journalism plays in democracy. It highlights the press’s duty to report fairly, fight misinformation, and educate citizens. The day honors the media’s tireless efforts to inform and empower millions, ensuring democracy’s foundation remains strong.
