A massive tragedy unfolded at Karur, Tamil Nadu, where a political rally organized by actor-turned-politician Vijay witnessed a deadly stampede claiming 38 lives, many of them women and children. The event, meant to mark a significant political occasion for Vijay’s new party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), turned chaotic when an unexpectedly large crowd gathered at the venue.
Authorities had approved the rally for up to 10,000 participants but actual attendance reportedly soared above 30,000. As Vijay arrived late, anxiety and impatience built amongst the crowd. The situation escalated when people pushed forward to get a glimpse of the popular leader. Barricades were broken, panic spread, and in the rush, many individuals, including children, suffocated or were trampled.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of distress, with people desperately trying to secure safe exits. Vijay himself stopped his speech, distributed water to those affected, and urged calm as ambulances struggled to reach the injured through the dense crowd. Emergency responders acted quickly, but the sheer number of victims overwhelmed the available resources.
The state government has responded by announcing a compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for the seriously injured. An official inquiry, led by a retired judge, has been launched to investigate the tragedy and identify lapses in planning and crowd control. Political leaders have stressed the need for strict crowd management protocols at public gatherings and called for measures to prevent such disasters in the future.
This incident has become one of the deadliest political rally tragedies in India in recent years, underscoring the importance of enforcing crowd control guidelines and ensuring public safety at all large events.
