The 2025 Vice President Election in India has become a high-profile contest, featuring two distinguished candidates from southern India. Scheduled for September 9, the election follows the early resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar in July due to health issues.
CP Radhakrishnan, representing the NDA (National Democratic Alliance), is the current Governor of Maharashtra and a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party from Tamil Nadu. He is recognized for his efforts in expanding the BJP’s presence in his state and brings years of political experience to the table.
B. Sudershan Reddy, representing the opposition INDIA bloc, is a retired Supreme Court judge. He is known for his unbiased judgments and was the first Lokayukta of Goa. Sudershan Reddy’s nomination signals the opposition’s focus on constitutional values and unity.
The Vice President of India is elected by members of both Houses of Parliament, with 782 MPs voting this year. A candidate needs at least 392 votes to win. According to current numbers, the NDA—backed by the BJP—holds a strong majority in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, making a win for Radhakrishnan highly likely.
While the opposition is highlighting the significance of constitutional integrity, the numbers favor the NDA candidate barring any major surprises. The election is seen as more than just a contest for the Vice Presidency; it is also a reflection of the ongoing ideological battle in Indian politics.
