Trump Orders Additional 25% Tariff on Indian Goods Amid Russian Oil Dispute

The United States has announced a sharp increase in tariffs on Indian goods, responding to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. Under this new policy, tariffs on most Indian exports to the US will first rise to 25% on August 7, 2025, then double to 50% on August 28, 2025. While some sensitive categories remain exempt, these tariffs represent some of the highest ever imposed by the US on Indian products.

The American administration, led by President Donald Trump, has justified this move as a necessary response to what it calls unfair trading practices and an important step in supporting broader sanctions against Russia. By continuing to buy Russian oil, according to the US government, India is undermining efforts to isolate Russia economically.

India has strongly objected to these actions, calling the new tariffs “unjustified and unreasonable.” Indian leaders emphasize their commitment to defending the country’s economic interests and are actively seeking solutions through diplomatic means.

The tariff hike is expected to have wide-reaching effects on trade, potentially raising prices and creating new challenges for businesses in both India and the United States. This escalation highlights growing trade tensions tied to global geopolitics and energy strategies in 2025.
