Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns as Vice President of India Citing Health Reasons

In an unexpected move, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post as the Vice President of India on Monday, July 21, 2025. The 74-year-old leader cited health concerns as the reason behind his decision.

Dhankhar announced his resignation shortly after presiding over the first day of the Monsoon Session as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His resignation is effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.

In his official letter, he stated,

“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India.”

Jagdeep Dhankhar was elected as Vice President in 2022 and had served in the role for nearly three years. Known for his calm demeanor and sharp intellect, he played a key role in maintaining decorum in the Rajya Sabha.

In his resignation letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar expressed heartfelt thanks to her for her continuous support. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers for their cooperation during his tenure.

“The Prime Minister’s support has been invaluable, and I have learned much during my time in office,” Dhankhar noted.

With the Vice President’s seat now vacant, the Election Commission is expected to announce a schedule for the election of the next Vice President soon.
