Shubhanshu Shukla Returns Safely After 18 Days in Space, Nation Celebrates

With a beaming smile and a wave to the camera, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla stepped out of the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, marking the end of his 18-day journey aboard the International Space Station. The historic mission not only made him the first Indian to visit the ISS but also the second Indian in space after Rakesh Sharma’s 1984 mission. His return on July 15 after a safe splashdown off the coast of San Diego brought joy and pride to the entire nation.

Back home in Lucknow, his family was overwhelmed with emotions. His mother called it a moment of rebirth, saying she had waited with bated breath for his safe return. His sister said the same wave of emotions that gripped them when he left resurfaced the moment they saw him walk out of the capsule. The family celebrated with prayers, sweets, and heartfelt gratitude, while their neighbors and well-wishers gathered to share in the joy. The celebrations reflected the pride of a country that watched one of its own touch the stars and return home safely.

Shubhanshu’s mission was part of Axiom Mission 4, which launched on June 25 and docked with the ISS on June 26. During the mission, the team carried out over 60 experiments from more than 30 countries. On return, the Dragon capsule brought back over 580 pounds of research material that will contribute to critical developments in science, medicine, and space exploration. The success of this mission has strengthened India’s position in global space research and inspired a new generation of explorers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Shubhanshu Shukla through a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Delighted by the successful return of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla from space! His journey to the International Space Station has inspired every Indian. A historic moment for our space journey. Welcome home, Shubhanshu!” The message quickly went viral and echoed the sentiment of millions who followed the mission with pride.

Now back on Earth, Shukla will undergo a week-long rehabilitation program to help his body readjust to gravity after weeks in microgravity. He is expected to meet his family soon and will likely be seen in public events celebrating his achievement and encouraging young minds to dream big.

Shubhanshu Shukla’s return is more than just the conclusion of a mission. It is the beginning of a new era for Indian space aspirations—proof that with vision, courage, and determination, even the stars are within reach.
