Fertilizer Security Boost: India to Import 3.1 Million MT DAP from Saudi Arabia

The Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilizers, Shri J.P. Nadda, concluded his visit to Saudi Arabia on 13th July 2025 with major developments in India-Saudi bilateral relations. A landmark long-term agreement was signed between Saudi Arabia’s Maaden and Indian companies for the supply of 3.1 million metric tons of Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) fertilizer annually starting from FY 2025-26.

The deal marks a significant increase from the 1.9 million MT imported in FY 2024-25 and reflects a 17% rise over the previous year’s imports.

During his visit from 11th to 13th July, Shri Nadda held high-level discussions in Dammam and Riyadh with Saudi leaders including His Excellency Mr. Bandar bin Ibrahim Al Khorayef, Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, and His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, Minister of Energy. The focus was on enhancing collaboration in fertilizers, petrochemicals, health services, and pharmaceuticals.

Bilateral meetings were also held with H.E. Abdulaziz Al-Rumaih, Saudi Vice Minister of Health, to promote cooperation in medical services, digital health solutions, and knowledge exchange. The meetings highlighted the importance of the MoU on Health signed earlier during PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the Kingdom.

Three Indian companies—IPL, KRIBHCO, and CIL—have committed to this fertilizer import arrangement with provisions for a further five-year extension. Both sides also expressed interest in expanding the agreement to include other key fertilizers like Urea.

A joint task force, led by India’s Secretary (Fertilizers) and Saudi Arabia’s Vice Minister for Mining Affairs, was formed to explore further collaboration in the fertilizer sector. Discussions also explored opportunities for Indian PSUs to invest in Saudi Arabia’s fertilizer industry and vice versa.

The Indian delegation, led by Shri Nadda, toured Maaden’s Ras Al Khair phosphate production plant and engaged with top officials from Maaden and the Saudi India Business Council.

This visit has not only strengthened India’s fertilizer security but also deepened economic and strategic ties between India and Saudi Arabia in key growth sectors.
