A tragic school shooting in Graz, Austria, has left the country in shock. On the morning of June 10, 2025, a 21-year-old former student entered BORG Dreierschützengasse, a senior secondary school in Graz, and opened fire in multiple classrooms.
According to local authorities, nine people lost their lives—including seven students and two adults (one of whom was a teacher). The suspected gunman, armed with a Glock pistol and a shotgun, was later found dead in the school’s bathroom. He died by suicide.
At least 12 others were injured, with several in critical condition. Emergency services, including more than 300 police officers, helicopters, and medical teams, rushed to the scene to secure the area and treat the wounded.
The incident is now considered Austria’s deadliest school shooting in modern history. A three-day national mourning period has been declared, with flags flown at half-staff across the country.
Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker called it “a dark day for Austria”, urging citizens to stand together in grief and unity. Schools across the country observed a minute of silence in honor of the victims.
The gunman reportedly left behind a suicide note. Early investigations suggest he may have been motivated by feelings of isolation or past bullying, though officials are still reviewing the case.
Mass shootings are extremely rare in Austria, which has strict gun control laws. This event has sparked renewed conversations about mental health, campus safety, and access to firearms.
As the country mourns this unimaginable loss, support centers and helplines have been made available for students, parents, and teachers affected by the incident.
