Northeast India Floods Turn Deadly as Toll Reaches 36, Over 5.5 Lakh Affected

Severe monsoon floods have wreaked havoc across Northeast India, claiming 36 lives and impacting more than 5.5 lakh people. The states of Assam, Manipur, and Sikkim are experiencing widespread devastation, with thousands displaced and key infrastructure damaged.

Assam is the most affected, with over 5.35 lakh people struggling due to rising river levels and breached embankments. Multiple districts, including Dhemaji and Cachar, are submerged under floodwaters. More than 1,200 villages are affected, and thousands have taken shelter in relief camps as the Brahmaputra and its tributaries continue to overflow.

In Manipur, flash floods have hit hard, affecting more than 56,000 residents. Roads, homes, and public facilities have been damaged or destroyed, and around 10,500 houses are reported to be partially or fully damaged. Relief operations are underway as the state tries to recover from the sudden deluge.

Sikkim has witnessed fatal landslides triggered by heavy rains. A tragic incident in Chhaten, North Sikkim, led to the deaths of three Indian Army personnel, while six others, including a commanding officer and his family, remain missing. The region’s hilly terrain has made rescue efforts especially difficult.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken stock of the situation, promising full support to the affected states. He has spoken with top officials and state leaders to ensure timely relief measures are provided to those in need.

The weather department has warned of continued heavy rainfall in the coming days, raising fears of further damage. Rescue teams remain on high alert as local authorities urge residents to follow safety advisories and avoid flood-prone areas.
