India is likely to increase its defence budget by ₹50,000 crore following the success of Operation Sindoor, according to government sources. This additional funding is expected to support the purchase of modern weapons, ammunition, and cutting-edge defence technology. It will also boost research and development efforts aimed at strengthening India’s military capabilities. The proposal for this budget increase may be approved during the Winter session of Parliament.
Earlier this year, the Indian government allocated a record ₹6.81 lakh crore for defence in the Union Budget. This marked a 9.53% increase from the previous financial year. Over the past decade, under the NDA government, the defence budget has seen a steady rise. In 2014-15, the allocation stood at ₹2.29 lakh crore. Today, the budget has nearly tripled, making up 13.45% of the total Union Budget.
Operation Sindoor played a major role in driving this proposed budget push. In this operation, India successfully destroyed nine terror camps located deep inside Pakistan without crossing the international border. The mission highlighted India’s growing military strength and technological advancement. During the operation, India’s multi-layered air defence systems were activated. These included the Russian-made S-400 Triumf system, the Israeli Barak-8 medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and India’s own Akash missile system. Alongside these, older but still effective systems like Pechora, OSA-AK, and LLAD guns were used to neutralise incoming threats from drones and missiles.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the success of Operation Sindoor in his speech on May 12. He stated that the credibility of India’s home-grown weapons had been firmly established and that the world now recognises the power of Made-in-India defence technology. The additional ₹50,000 crore, once approved, is expected to be directed toward critical procurements and the development of indigenous defence systems, further pushing India toward self-reliance in modern warfare.
