Stampede at Goa’s Sree Lairai Devi Temple Leaves Six Dead, Several Injured

A tragic stampede took place early Saturday morning at the Sree Lairai Devi Temple in Shirgao, Goa, during the annual Shirgao Zatra festival. At least six devotees lost their lives, and over 15 others were injured as chaos broke out during the temple’s famous fire-walking ritual.

    What Happened?

The incident occurred during the peak hours of the Agnidivya ritual, where thousands of barefoot devotees walk over burning embers to show their devotion to Goddess Lairai. Known as “dhonds,” these participants perform this act as a spiritual offering.

As the ritual reached its climax, the dense crowd surged forward, triggering a stampede. Emergency teams responded quickly, but the narrow space and heavy footfall made rescue operations difficult.

    Investigation Underway

Police officials, including North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal, confirmed that a full investigation is underway. The exact cause of the stampede has not yet been determined, but authorities suspect overcrowding and mismanagement of the crowd as possible reasons.

    About the Shirgao Zatra

The tragedy has cast a shadow over the celebrations. Local authorities and community leaders are working to support the families of the victims. Medical teams have been deployed to treat the injured, and additional security measures are expected to be introduced for future festivals.
