India’s GST Revenue Hits Record ₹2.37 Lakh Crore in April 2025, Rises 12.6%

India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection soared to an all-time high of ₹2.37 lakh crore in April 2025, marking a significant 12.6% increase compared to the ₹2.10 lakh crore collected in April 2024. This milestone represents the highest monthly GST revenue since the tax system was introduced in July 2017, highlighting strong economic momentum and improved tax compliance.

A combination of factors contributed to this surge. The end of the financial year usually sees businesses finalizing accounts and settling dues, which naturally leads to higher tax payments. Enhanced compliance mechanisms and digital oversight have also played a key role in widening the tax net. Moreover, robust domestic consumption continues to support revenue from internal transactions, while imports have also grown, contributing to the overall increase.

The government recorded substantial inflows across all tax segments. Central GST amounted to ₹48,634 crore, State GST brought in ₹59,372 crore, Integrated GST stood at ₹1.15 lakh crore, and cess collections reached ₹13,451 crore. Domestic transactions generated nearly ₹1.9 lakh crore, growing 10.7% from last year. Revenue from imported goods rose sharply by 20.8%, underlining increased trade activity.

Refunds issued in April totaled ₹27,341 crore, a 48.3% increase over the previous year. Even after accounting for refunds, the net GST revenue stood at over ₹2.09 lakh crore, reflecting a healthy 9.1% year-on-year growth.

Experts see this as a strong indicator of India’s economic resilience. Saurabh Agarwal, Tax Partner at EY India, remarked that the record collections not only reflect efficient tax administration but also signal continued demand across sectors.

With the Union Government aiming for an 11% rise in GST revenues this financial year, April’s numbers offer a promising start. This achievement lays a solid foundation for meeting fiscal goals and underscores the positive direction of India’s economic and tax ecosystem.
